romney trailing. according to a new fox news poll, president obama leads romney by five points among likely voters nationwide. 48% to 43%. catch that, the fox poll. highly significant there. let's go right now to howard on this question. it looks to me like this divorce papers are pretty much out there right now. all that you hear now is romney doesn't really want to be stuck in that little basement where they cut medicare. >> well, mitt romney was on the campaign trail today saying, i have a little secret, i'm going to win pennsylvania. okay. he's not going to win pennsylvania. >> it's the oldest state in the union. >> he's not going to win pennsylvania with paul ryan's profile on medicare or budget cutting or anything else. so if mitt romney is serious about making a play in pennsylvania, that just underscores how inconvenient paul ryan has become. look, mitt romney did not pick paul ryan because of paul ryan's medicare or budget programs. he picked paul ryan because of his youthfulness, because of the cultural appeal, because of what paul ryan himself calls the deer hunter catholi

the obama administration insisted the assault was a protest that got out of hand. fox news confirmed u.s. intelligence did indeed know it was a terror attack of 24 hours of that evening. bill: yesterday the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff and the defense secretary finally statedding the obvious. >> it was a terrorist attack. as we determined details of what took place there and how that attack took place that it became clear there were terrorists who planned that attack. that's when i came to that conclusion. >> day after or was -- >> took a while to really get some of the feedback from what exactly happened at that location. >> there was a thread of intelligence reporting that groups in the environment in western, correction, eastern libya, were seeking to coalesce but there wasn't anything specific. bill: well, peter doocy is live in washington drilling down on the specifics. peter, if the administration knew it was terrorist attack in 24 hours, why did they not just say that? >> reporter: we heard from administration officials there is ongoing investigation and more details wi

>> i need you to go out and find someone that voted for barack obama and get them to vote for me, all right. >> romney's pitch comes as polling shows president obama has the advantage in nine battleground states including razor-thin leads in north carolina and nevada and a bigger lead in mitt romney's vacation destination, new hampshire. all of it comes with a new headline from politico. in the end, it's mitt. all of us making a first presidential debate, which is less than one week away now even more critical for the governor. let's bring in "news nation" panel. david godfrin, michael and steve daise, conservative radio talk show host. thanks to you for being with me on this friday. steve, let me start with you. these new poll numbers, the head-to-head showing the president now ahead in all three states, north carolina, nevada and new hampshire. new hampshire, of course, romney's home away from home where he has a vacation spot. governor romney's favorables continue to be underwater in all but north carolina now. combine these numbers with what we've seen all week, how worried a

to be trailing after the democratic convention. president obama is pulling ahead in the upper midwest. i think this may be less about -- this is only mitt romney, and mitt has to be mitt and it's all about mitt. this runs deeper than that. this is a sort of recentering of the american electorate we're witnessing. >> let's go back to the political article. it isn't the chair or the ho-hum convention or the looked video or stewart stevens or the improving economy or media bias or the message or mormonism. it's mitt. is it that simple? is the problem at the end of the day that it's the candidate himself? it's mitt romney who perhaps isn't what some thought he would be in terms of a candidate? >> i think it's some of the intangibles that surround the race, but i think largely it's the candidate himself. the problem, as i perceive it, is he's trying to please too many different bosses. he had to attack far to the right craig to win the primary process. he survived it. i thought there was going to be a leftward move towards the center to put him more where he was at the governor of massachusetts. it

than barack obama. he has to throw some punches. he can't just kind of go in there sort of apologetically and be very gentle with obama. he has to really throw some punches and show people why he's the better candidate. i think a lot of these polls are a little bit overstated. i think the democrats have been oversampled in a lot of polls, and i don't think there's that huge of a gap between romney and obama. nonetheless, he has to make a really strong stand in the first debate. this is probably the most important debate for him at this point in the campaign. >> i don't want to let that statement about polls go unanswered. eugene robinson's piece today is about what he calls the new conspiracy. republicans diluted that there are skewed polls. paul ryan was the latest one to join on the bandwagon last night talking about wisconsin. >> i don't believe that particular poll. i won't get into the methodologies about it. >> they weren't talking about a specific poll in na statement, which sounds like it doesn't matter to him which poll it is but it's tainted. what's your take o

.n. as the obama administration explanation of the attack in benghazi continues to einvolve this morning. secretary of state hillary clinton suggesting in a gathering of world leaders that the attack was the work of an al qaeda affiliate. the secretary saying this. now with a larger safe haven and increased freedom to maneuver, terrorists are seeking to extend their reach and networks in multiple directions. they're working with other violent extremists to undermined the democratic transitions underway in north africa as we tragically saw in benghazi. that is the first time secretary clinton acknowledged al qaeda as possibly playing a role in that attack. we'll have more on that coming up. a group of senators are now demanding that susan rice, america's ambassador to the u.n., provide more answers what happened in benghazi. new hampshire senator, kelly ayotte one of those four senators who sent a scathing letter to ambassador susan rice, she will be here to tell us first-hand what that is all about. bill: meantime the violence in syria getting worse by the day. a pair of massive explosions rocking

in the race for president. barack obama and mitt romney trade prime time shots at each other with just six weeks left in the race. >> disaster at 20,000 feet. dozens still missing after an avalanche on one of the world's highest peaks. >>> and upset at the emmys. a new upstages "mad men" and grabs the top trophy. good morning. i'm zoraida sambolin. >> i'm john berman. >>> our big story off the bat, tensions rising in the race for the white house. mitt romney promising to get more aggressive in the final six weeks of the campaign. he said the president has been intentionally misleading voters about his positions. we have two telling pieces of sound to play. first, listen to president obama's heated words responding to criticism on his foreign policy. then listen to romney counter about the president's attacks on his own positions. >> i've executed on my foreign policy. it's one that the american people largely agree with. so, you know, if governor romney is suggesting that we should start another war, he should say so. >> i'm not going to try to fool people into thinking he believes things

. president obama and prime minister netanyahu attended the united nations general assembly in new york, but at different times. the white house insisted it was a scheduling issue, not a snub. no meetings, no handshakes. but today a follow-up phone call that a senior administration official told cnn lasted more than 20 minutes. in a statement released by the white house, the conversation included "a range of security issues," the president reaffirmed his commitment to israel security. and the two leaders were in full agreement on preventing iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. prime minister netanyahu has been pressuring the u.s. to lay down a so-called red line on iran that would prompt military action. at the u.n. he used a prop to drive home his point. >> a red line should be drawn right here. before iran completes the second stage of nuclear enrichment necessary to make a bomb. >> reporter: while some have accused the prime minister of pressuring the president to help gop nominee mitt romney, mr. netanyahu has said his actions are not tied to the u.s. political calendar. the white

different messages. as president obama widens his ohio lead in the latest polls, joining me for our daily fix, chris cizilla, managing editor of post politics.com and "washington post" political reporter karen tu multi. chris, first talk about the polls. how significant is it the double-digit lead in some polls now, cbs/"new york times" poll, the trend first in "the washington post" and our wall street journal/nbc news polls as well, is ohio moving fairly steadily into the obama camp? >> i would say the answer to that at the moment is yes. the post on monday did move ohio from a tossup state to a lean obama state. not just because of our poll that showed him up eight points but because of the wealth of data we've had out there. i would say as a word of caution, i don't think anyone including the obama team thinks they are going to win ohio by eight or ten points. they are ahead at the moment. they're probably ahead and think they may win by three, four, five points, but remember how critical ohio is to mitt romney's math. hard to see how he gets to 270 electoral votes without it. why he's

mitt has been matching obama small ball for small ball. a hit-and-run critique here. this is important. a hit-and-run critique here, a slogan of the week there. that's what we've been saying. sam stein, there is no over arching message, no reagan message, no thatcher message, no george h.w. bush message in 1988. it's small ball. you have a libyan embassy blow up. you push him out the next morning and do something that even the romney campaign now understands was an absolute disaster. the president makes a faux pa about a bump in the road which was a stupid thing to say but they obsess over that. they say this is the message. this is how we're getting people back to work and change the economy clearly they're chasing after news headlines trying to win the day. >> that is a good way to put it. they're chasing. >> but it's weird because you can argue they're racing after the wrong news headlines. for instance we spent a couple days obsessing over a 1980s or 1990s redistribution quote from obama right? that was the news of the day for the romney campaign at that time. we gave more attentio

this morning, the eyes of the world will be on president obama as he speaks to the united nations general assembly on its opening day. the president is expected to address the recent violence in the middle east, the u.s. consulate attack in libya and issue a new warning to iran about its nuclear program. >> but president obama is not meeting one-on-one with any of the world leaders. he had 13 bilateral meetings last year. cnn foreign affairs reporter is with us. what can we expect from the president's speech this morning? >> obviously the president is going to touch on some of the big issues out there. he's going to talk about syria and how to contain the crisis there and get president bashar al assad out. he has to address the last couple of weeks, the consulate attack in libya but more importantly, the raging protests that have gone through the middle east, these anti-american protests. secretary clinton was speaking to the clinton global initiative yesterday and previewed what the president was going to say about the need to not have extremist hijack the arab spring. let's take a liste

by the obama campaign. >> i think the president will not be able to continue to mischaracterize my pathway. so i will be able to mine and he will describe his and people will make a choice. that is it great thing about democracy. i will not fool people to think things. that ends during the debates. >> reporter: the governor says the romney campaign pointing to the acknowledgement that the president made last night not in that "60 minutes" interview that was broadcast but in the webcast that followed saying he thinks some of the attacks his campaign leveled at governor romney have actually gone overboard, patti ann. patti ann: yeah, john. the romney campaign hammering the president on that "60 minutes" interview. tell us more about that. >> reporter: hammering him on a number of fronts. the current idea that the middle east unrest and murder of chris stevens are bumps in the road as president obama said last night, characterizing as quote noise, israel's concerns about iran's pursuit of a nuclear weapon. then there was this about the president's biggest disappointment. >> if you ask me what's m
